About this work

Academy

Each line in Academy starts fast and wobbles, pressed hard at the turn and lifted light at the end. Some loops double back over themselves. The marks look written rather than painted, done at the speed of a hand that is not bothering to be neat. The framed poster of Academy by Cy Twombly comes in four sizes, so one can hang alone over a mantel or a run of frames can climb a staircase. Big or small, the scrawl keeps its pace. A mid size works on a stairwell wall, hung so the marks sit at eye level on the way up. Going down the stairs, the loops read like quick handwriting; from the bottom, the whole width shows.
