About this work

Bay Of Naples

Much of Bay of Naples by Cy Twombly is empty sheet. The abstract marks gather in loose clusters, and the gaps between them set the pace. The eye enters at one group, skips the space, and lands on the next. The landscape width matches that sideways drift. The poster is trimmed to a clean edge with no printed border, so the marks run right to the paper edge. Nothing frames them off. Where the sheet ends, the drawing ends too. It suits a wall you pass often, a hallway or the space beside a desk. From across the room the clusters read first. Up close, the blank paper does as much as the marks.
