Death Of Pompey (Rome)

Nothing here looks like a scene. Cy Twombly lets the handwriting act like a page of notes, names and dates crossed out and written again. Death Of Pompey (Rome) hands the story to the letters: a Roman general, killed in Egypt, remembered in pencil. Hangers grip the top and bottom of the paper, magnets holding without pinning or puncturing. No hole goes into the sheet, so it keeps its full area and hangs flat against the wall. The matte surface cuts glare, so faint pencil marks stay clear under a lamp. Morning light from a wide living room window moves over the paper and changes what shows through the day.
