About this work

Ferragosto Iv

Crayon, pencil and paint all sit in the marks of Ferragosto IV. Cy Twombly worked this way across his career, letting lines look scrawled and half written, somewhere between a drawing and a sentence on a red ground. The strokes stay fast. On canvas the weave carries a shallow tooth, so the ink breaks a little along each stroke. That break suits the crayon look of the original, and the matte face keeps glare off the red. It earns a spot above a desk or a low cabinet, lit from the side by a window. At that angle the tooth of the weave shows, and the loops gain a faint texture.
