About this work

Ferragosto V

A broad red field carries pale scribbles in Ferragosto V, a work from the years Cy Twombly spent in Italy, when the big gestures of American painting loosened toward handwriting. He had crossed the Atlantic in the late 1950s and made Italy his working home. The poster surface is uncoated and natural white, with a faint tooth and no gloss. That flat finish leaves the dry chalky strokes soft, so the thin washed areas read clearly from any angle. Above a writing desk in a study, hung low enough to view while seated, the whole picture looks like one quick sweep. Close up, small smudges and hesitant turns appear.
