Fifty Days At Iliam. Shield Of Achilles

After the war, a younger American generation let handwriting into their canvases. Cy Twombly carried that furthest after he moved to Italy. The Shield of Achilles panel of Fifty Days at Iliam holds a wobbly red circle on cream, names slanting over the paint. The canvas print comes in four sizes, small for a study or wide for a big wall. The thick 4cm bars hold the shape a little off the surface, and shadow gathers at the sides. At the end of a hallway, it hangs well at eye level. From the door the names blur into one round red shape. Up close, each scrawled letter stands apart.
