Hero And Leandro (a Painting In Four Parts) Part I

Pencil, crayon and paint share the surface in much of the work of Cy Twombly, and Hero and Leandro, Part I comes from that habit. A line starts as drawing, turns into words and ends as painting, sometimes all three at once. The canvas is a cotton polyester blend, heavy in the hand at 300 to 350gsm, stretched over FSC certified wooden bars. That weight keeps the cloth from buckling. Thin strokes stay where they were put. In a home study, hung behind a desk at seated height, the big gestures carry from the doorway. From the chair, the finer details come forward, one at a time.
