Hero And Leandro (a Painting In Four Parts) Part III

Hero And Leandro Part III by Cy Twombly reads differently depending on where you stand. Across the room the painting becomes one long band of handwriting, quick and loose on a pale ground. The framed poster keeps that surface flat under a sheet of glass, with a heavier wood frame around it. Oak or ash moulding runs thick and wide, so the frame sits solid on the wall and does not get lost behind the picture. Hang it above a low console, with the centre near eye level and light coming from the side. From the sofa you take in the whole band of writing at once, while standing close you notice where the hand pressed harder and where it let go.
