Hero And Leandro (a Painting In Four Parts) Part III

In postwar American painting a scrawl could carry a story, and Cy Twombly made that idea his own. Part III of Hero and Leandro belongs to the same thread, a Greek legend told through handwriting rather than with figures, one panel of four. The poster with hangers holds the picture between two wooden bars, one above and one below, sides left bare. The range runs from small to very wide on a single shape, so a stacked pair or a row is easy to plan. Above a sofa it hangs clear of the cushions. Seen from the kitchen doorway, the full width shows at once. A few steps nearer, the hurried writing takes over.
