Iii Notes From Salalah (note I)

Space does most of the talking in III Notes from Salalah (note I). Cy Twombly built tone out of small changes in pressure, a gently pressed stroke, a crayon dragged dry, and around those differences the quiet of the picture carries the rest. On canvas the weave has a shallow tooth, so the ink breaks a little along each stroke and the surface sits closer to paint than to paper. Under a lamp there is no hard glare to flatten it. Hang it opposite a window in a bedroom. In morning light the sparse marks hold their own from the bed. Up close the weave puts a faint ridged feel under the ink.
