About this work

Lepanto

Warm yellow carries most of the field in Lepanto, Part I, with red-orange set against it in patches around the boats. Pale sail shapes sit between them, so no colour overwhelms another. Cy Twombly often built whole pictures from two or three tones, working in a loose, gestural way. On the canvas print, the shallow tooth of the weave breaks the ink very slightly, so flat areas gain a little texture. The yellow field shows it most. Under a lamp it reads closer to paint than to paper. Above a sofa in a living room, it hangs well. Low evening sun from a side window catches the weave and adds a faint sheen to the colour.
