About this work

Lepanto

Drawing and painting blur in Lepanto, Part II. The boats are sketched as if dashed off in a hurry, colour splashed over them, some of it left to run. Cy Twombly spent a career between handwriting and painting, pencil, crayon and paint often sharing one surface. It comes as a canvas print in four sizes, on a slim 2cm bar or a thicker 4cm one. A narrow alcove calls for a modest width; a long landing leaves space for something much bigger. A tall stairwell gives it air. From the bottom stair the tilt of each hull shows; halfway up, the finer scribbles come into focus.
