About this work

Lepanto

Painters who started out after the war let the hand show. Cy Twombly carried that manner to Italy in the late 1950s. Lepanto, Part VI works it onto open water, yellow hulls sketched over a blue-green sea, red flaring where the firing starts. The poster is printed on thick 250gsm paper with a matte face. The weight gives it body. It hangs flat, without curling. Acid free stock, made to stay pale for years. On the long wall of a living room, its middle a metre and a half up, the painting reads from the sofa as one frieze of boats. Nearer, the crayon strokes inside each hull take over.
