About this work

Lepanto

Ten steps back, Lepanto, Part VII is just a crowd of small boats on a wide wash of bright yellow. Up close it separates into drips, smears and scuffed patches of paint, the way Cy Twombly built his surfaces. Arriving ready to hang, with its hanging kit in the box, the framed poster gets a firm border from the wider moulding, a neat, square stop for all that running colour. At the far end of a narrow hallway, centred at standing height, the frame catches you first. Inside it wait the little boats. One step nearer, the rough texture takes over completely.
