About this work

Lepanto

Yellow, orange and deep red sit against darker ground in Lepanto, Part XI by Cy Twombly, and every warm area looks hotter for it. Sails and hulls show as flat shapes, outlined rather than shaded, so colour alone sets the form. Printed on cotton blend canvas and stretched over wooden bars, it arrives as a solid object with real depth off the wall. The cloth adds a little tooth under the paint. It needs a long, clear stretch above a sideboard or a bed. Halfway across the room the hot colour leads. A step away, the drawn edges of the sails take over.
