About this work

Nicolas Irises

Handwriting walked into painting after the war, when artists on both sides of the Atlantic let the scrawl of a pencil count as art. Nicolas Irises by Cy Twombly carries that habit toward the flower in its title, the iris set down in loose gestures. The poster is matte and uncoated, natural white rather than bright. That flat surface means no glare under a lamp, so thin pencil lines and pale washes stay readable from any side. It sits above a writing desk at head height. From the chair you take in the whole flower shape first; a step nearer, the small pencil flecks appear.
