About this work

Night Watch

Crayon, pencil and paint often shared one surface in the practice of Cy Twombly, the written line treated as image. In Night Watch the dry white stroke sits on grey like chalk on a school board, at once script and drawing, never quite either. The canvas print comes in four sizes, from small to wider than a sofa, with a slim 2cm bar or a thick 4cm one. A deep bar leaves a shadow gap behind the grey field. Over a bed or a low sideboard it can go large. The rows stay calm at any width. Up near, the grain of the chalk shows and the grey turns patchy.
