About this work

Night Watch

At a distance the pale rows read as one soft band of script on grey. Nearer in, each round opens into a separate dry turn of the hand. Night Watch is made for exactly that shift, big rhythm far off, small drag up close. In the framed poster, matte uncoated paper sits behind shatterproof plexiglass. The matte face cuts glare down under a lamp, so the grey stays even and the white strokes stay legible from any angle. A north facing hallway wall takes it well at head height. Daylight there is soft. The pale writing holds its own against the grey, and from the stairs you catch the band first, then the detail.
