Nine Discourses On Commodus

Grey scrawl gathers in one corner of a pale panel, the numeral II written into it by hand. That is the visible core of Nine Discourses on Commodus, Part II, a tall work tied to Roman history by name and gesture. The canvas print carries the image around its sides, so no frame is needed. Commodus ruled Rome with cruelty, and Cy Twombly answered that story with scribbled lines rather than scenes. Pressure shows in the strokes, some pressed hard, some barely there. The matte surface keeps the greys soft, no shine under a lamp. Pale grey and off white sit together across most of the panel, with small darker bursts breaking the calm. The wrapped sides mean the image continues out of view, no bare edges to cover.
