Nine Discourses On Commodus

Drawing and painting share the same surface here. Cy Twombly worked that way for decades, scrawled lines doing the job of words. Nine Discourses On Commodus, Part V carries the habit into a grey ground, pale strokes crossing darker patches. The canvas print comes in four sizes, with a slim 2cm or a thick 4cm bar depth. A deeper bar gives the grey more side, which helps a soft tonal surface like this. Over a bed it holds its own at the bigger formats, the portrait shape clearing the headboard. From the far side of the bedroom the strokes run together into one slow grey movement.
