Nine Discourses On Commodus

Nine Discourses on Commodus, Part VI holds to a grey monochrome, pale tones set against white, with darker patches where paint was dragged and wiped. White shows through in soft clouds. Nothing bright enters, so the darker lines carry the picture alone. The canvas weave has a shallow tooth, so the ink breaks a little along each stroke. A step back, and the surface reads more like paint than paper, a match for the rubbed passages of the painting. In a bedroom it works on the wall facing the window, where side light picks up the weave. From the bed the grey looks calm and even. Up close, the broken ink shows.
