Nine Discourses On Commodus

Each gestural stroke in Nine Discourses on Commodus, Part VI carries its own record of pressure, dug in dark at the start, then thin and quick by the end. Some lines smear where a hand or rag pulled them sideways before they settled. Nothing is traced or neat. The framed poster is made in four sizes, from shelf scale up to a width that fills the space over a mantel. A portrait shape like this suits tall walls and narrow gaps between windows. It fits the end wall of a stairwell, hung so the centre meets the sightline halfway up the climb. From below, the scrawled block looks like one dense patch on pale ground.
