About this work

Pan II

Named for the wild god of Greek myth, Pan II belongs to the postwar decades, when American painters let gesture and handwriting do the work of a picture. Cy Twombly kept the freedom of abstract expressionism. Then he bent it toward writing. The poster is matte and uncoated, a natural white rather than a bright one. No sheen means no glare under a lamp, so thin drawn lines stay soft and clear from any angle. A narrow hallway or the space above a desk suits the tall shape. Light from a side window will not wash it out, so the writing stays readable at every step.
