About this work

Quarzeat

One coined word, Quarzeat, names a painted field. Cy Twombly usually worked pale grounds under darker passes, so tone deepens where strokes cross and a thin crayon pass stays faint against the paint. Contrast, more than colour, sets the mood. The canvas is made in four sizes, from small to wide, with a slim 2cm bar or a deeper 4cm one. The depth decides how far the picture stands off the wall and casts a small shadow at the edge. Over a bed it looks right when the width nearly matches the headboard. From the pillow the heavier scrawl shows first; standing back, the tones even out.
