The Fire That Consumes All Before It

American painting after the war loosened until handwriting could carry a whole picture, and Cy Twombly pushed it furthest. The Fire That Consumes All Before It is the result: a flame in red and orange rising on cream, names scrawled inside it. Ink breaks slightly at every stroke because the canvas weave carries a shallow tooth. That break matters here: the warm colour keeps the look of something applied by hand, and the letters hold their ragged edges. A wall above a desk suits its tall shape. From across the room it reads as one flame and little else; up close the names in the red separate into letters.
