Anabasis (Xenophon)

A march runs behind the picture. Xenophon wrote about ten thousand Greek soldiers walking home through enemy country, and the marks in Anabasis (Xenophon) by Cy Twombly seem to move the same way, step after step, doubling back, a long trail across open ground. Hangers with magnets grip the sheet, so nothing pins or punctures the paper. It keeps its full area, corners included. The matte surface takes light softly, so the thin lines stay clear under a lamp. A kitchen wall or a stair landing suits it, places where the light changes all day. Morning sun slides across the paper without a shine. The sheet takes no holes, so the print can move house with you.
