About Nine Discourses On Commodus

Commodus, the Roman emperor, gives the series its name, and old Rome supplied subjects to Cy Twombly again and again, from myths to rulers. Nine Discourses On Commodus, Part IX is the ninth of nine parts, a Roman story told with no figures at all. There are three sizes, all with the same proportions, so a tall pair stacked one above the other lines up cleanly. Wooden hangers at top and bottom keep it level and let it move without fuss. The portrait shape fits narrow spots, a hallway end or the gap beside a wardrobe. Even at a modest size, the red reaches the far end of the corridor.
