About Fifty Days At Iliam: Shades Of Achilles

Pencil, crayon and thinned paint share the work in Shades of Achilles, Patroclus, and Hector, from the Fifty Days at Iliam series. Cy Twombly lets the line fall between drawing and writing, so the dead of the war at Troy appear as shield outlines, barely filled in. The canvas print is made in four sizes, on a slim 2cm bar or a thicker 4cm one. A wide size works best, because the empty space around the three shields is most of the image. It wants a big wall facing the sofa. Or the space above a low sideboard. From a few steps back, they settle into one calm shape on the cream field.

Measure the wall space and pick a size that covers about two thirds of it, or of the furniture below. If you are torn between two sizes, the larger one usually looks better.

Visitors in the US and Canada see standard inch sizes. Everyone else sees metric sizes. Both are printed to exact dimensions.
