About Hero And Leandro (a Painting In Four Parts) Part I

Old stories ran through the career of Cy Twombly, and few are older than the one behind this painting. Hero and Leandro, Part I takes the names of two lovers kept apart by a stretch of sea he swam at night, and the Greek myth unfolds over four panels. This print comes in three sizes, all with the same landscape shape, which makes a stacked pair or a vertical run easy to plan. Wooden hangers grip top and bottom. The picture hangs flat. In an entryway, hung at chest height beside the coat hooks, the plain hanger bars above and below stay in view, part of how the picture is put together.
