About Lepanto

Red does the most work in Lepanto, Part XI by Cy Twombly. Its brightest patch sits near the middle, sail shapes rise out of it, and quieter space surrounds the busiest part. Weight gathers where the paint piles up. Then the picture opens out. Matte and uncoated, the poster is printed on natural white paper with no sheen. Under a lamp nothing glares back, so the red stays full and the thin scrawls hold their softness from any angle. It belongs in a hallway, or on the wall at the top of the stairs. Three steps back the red patch carries the view, one step in and the sail shapes separate out.
