About Nine Discourses On Commodus

Part one of nine, and the handwriting behaves like speech under strain: jammed bursts, gaps, another burst. The scribbles in Nine Discourses On Commodus, Part I seem to score and smudge the surface more than describe anything. Cy Twombly titled it for an emperor remembered for violence, reaching back into classical history. It ships as a poster with hangers, in three sizes, every one cut to the same tall silhouette. Because the proportions never change, a stacked pair or a vertical run is easy to plan. In a stairwell, hung midway up the long stretch, the work sits level with your shoulders on the way up. At that distance the bursts show their full speed.
